The adult colonies of this species form abundant dense clumps on rocks and piles, and may be collected from Lagoon Pond Bridge at Martha's Vineyard, Mass. They are conspicuous because of the orange color of the ascidiozooids, which shows through the tunics. The animals are hermaphroditic and viviparous. Often found washed ashore on beaches these orange, irregular colonies almost resemble something artificial rather than living.
