RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

The Marine Resources Center’s (MRC’s) aquatic facilities are designed to foster and support projects that may depend on controlled environmental conditions and/or 7-day-a-week animal care. These include studies on neurobiology and behavior, reproductive biology, and population dynamics related to fisheries management. Culture of aquatic organisms used as biomedical models is facilitated in the mariculture laboratory and allows ontogenic studies and research on any critical developmental stage. For additional information contact the MRC Manager's Office at (508) 289-7700.

The MRC has 32,000 ft2 of wet lab space dedicated to research on the first floor. A 2,000 ft2 mariculture laboratory, located on the second floor is equipped with ambient, filtered-tempered, and recirculating seawater for rearing aquatic species for research or commercial aquaculture purposes. Custom holding requirements are easily accommodated. The lab has its own air circulating system to facilitate the maintenance of proper conditions required for culturing. All effluent seawater from the room is ozonated to destroy pathogenic or exotic species. Several organisms are currently being cultured in the MRC including bivalves, cephalopods, opisthobranch mollusks, decapod crustaceans, and elasmobranch fish. Research space is available for mariculture development programs and researchers are encouraged to apply. The MRC promotes cooperative collaboration between commercial aquaculture and basic scientific research and development.
