Björn Afzelius

April 27, 2008

The MBL has received word of the passing of Corporation Life Member Dr. Björn Afzelius who died in Stockholm, Sweden last week. The MBL flag will be lowered in his memory.

Dr. Afzelius, a professor emeritus at Stockholm University, was a long time investigator at the MBL, and was on the faculty of the Fertilization and Gamete Physiology Course (FERGAP) that was run at the MBL in the 1960s and 1970s. Dr. Afzelius did much of the basic ultrastructural analysis of cilia and flagella that, in turn, helped provide the firm platform for today's research on these organelles and their relation to motility and disease.

In 2007 Dr. Afzelius received the Keynote Speaker Award at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Biology of Cilia and Flagella meeting.
